Inservice training

We enrol teachers who are identified as being suitable for upskilling on courses which are run after school. Courses are held based on local groups of schools.

The courses are team-taught by skilled primary language practitioners working together with native speakers.

Early involvement of native speakers helps to ensure that language training is relevant, up-to-date and above all that quality is maintained.

Our courses are primarily pedagogic in nature and aimed at giving those teachers who possess basic language ability the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to incorporate languages into their classroom work.

We aim to refresh existing skills by way of conversation, introduction to foreign language news media and internet resources, and overseas exchange programmes, and we help teachers quickly locate the relevant tried and tested resources they can use with the classes.

Typical components of the course include:

  • Training in and discussion of how teachers can make use of foreign language activities in different subject areas of the curriculum and at different times of the day
  • An introduction to some of the purposeful activities such as songs and games by which children can learn in an enjoyable way. The benefits of the rhythms and repetition of songs in practicing and consolidating foreign language acquisition are emphasized
  • Conversation and language practice
  • An introduction to the Language Ladder concept. How this assessment method can be attractive both to children and their parents
  • Guidance as to specific courses that teachers can follow in class and the media that they can employ
